Diaper rash is very common and often peaks for babies at 6-9 months of age. If not treated early, it can quickly get out of control. Trust me, our daughter had "the worst case I have ever seen!!!" (Quote from our daycare provider and our pediatrician). Here are some tips for healing diaper rash:

(1) Air time. The best and most effective way to combat diaper rash is to give baby's bottom lots of fresh air. If all you can do is five minutes after each change even that will help. It will be better to let baby go diaper free for an hour or two each day You can do this by keeping baby in a confined area (play pen or pack and play covered with towels to catch the mess).

(2) Wash gently. Clean baby's bottom with warm water and a soft cloth. Avoid baby wipes as sometimes the chemicals in them can make things worse.

(2) Dry thoroughly. Make sure to pat baby's bottom dry after you clean her. You could even use a hairdryer set on cool and low to dry off her bottom.

(3) Find a butt cream you like and use it liberally, EVERY time you put on a new diaper.

(4) Watch our for yeast. A diaper rash that is a yeast infection will have lots of little red dots all over. This type of a rash will need to be treated either with a prescription cream or with an over the counter yeast infection cream. Call your doctor if you suspect a yeast rash.
