It’s not abnormal for babies, toddlers, and young children to get 8-10 colds per year.

It’s always a good idea to call your Pediatrician when your child has a cold. It’s a must if your baby is less than 3 months old.

The new FDA Guidelines say that Babies and Children under 6 years old should NOT be given over the counter cough and cold medicines. Before giving a child over the age of 6 any cough and cold medicines, call your Doctor.

Here are some tips to making your baby/toddler more comfortable when he/she has a cold:

1)Prop a pillow under one side of your baby’s mattress to create a gentle slope. This makes it easier for them to breath and I think also reduces nasal drip.

2) Use Vicks’ rub for babies. Do not use the one for adults, Vicks makes one especially for babies. I rub it on my baby’s chest.

3) Purchase the Pediacare plug in thing and the vicks like pads that create a vicks like smell in the room. These do a great job of easing my son’s congestion when he has a cold.

4) Use the nasal aspirator. Baby/Toddler will scream but it helps. Make sure you squirt some saline drops up their nose first. Pinch the nasal aspirator together before you put it in your baby’s nose, insert, and release your fingers. This will suck in all of the mucous. Then remove it from your baby’s nose and clean it out. My pediatrician only recommends the nasal aspirator if your baby is having trouble eating or sleeping. If they're still doing these ok, then don't bother.

To avoid colds:

1)Wash your hands repeatedly

2)Wash your baby’s hands every time you come into the house and before they go to bed

3)Make sure your baby’s childcare provider is diligent about washing their hands

4)Use an antibacterial wipe on your steering wheel regularly.

5)Wash your child’s toys (an antibacterial wipe works fine) regularly. Especially after hosting a playdate where a child sounded ill.
